Coffee and Its Advantages

This entry talks about the advantages of coffee. A later one will discuss its disadvantages. First, coffee, because of its caffeine, promotes alertness and sharper mental functioning. The coffee bean was a favorite of many writers, especially Balzac and Philip K. Dick. Some of the beneficial effects of coffee, summarized by Ray Peat, include:
  1. Improved thyroid health.
  2. Protecting the liver from alcohol damage.
  3. Protection against radiation-, chemical-, viral-, and estrogen-caused cancer.
  4. Maximizes the body's use of progesterone.
  5. Protects against breast cancer.
  6. Provides magnesium.
  7. Inhibits blood clotting.
  8. Protects against Parkinson's.
  9. Antioxidant function.
These very significant advantages are also associated with quicker mental functioning and the greater ability of writers to marshal their thoughts. I had two cups of coffee today as an experiment. I have not had coffee in more than ten years. I was able to write an entire 2,800-word chapter for a new book I'm writing, complete with research and footnotes and bibliographic entries. The chapter, by the way, is about Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. You can read it when the book comes out in 2009, published by Writer's Digest Books.

I am a big coffee lover. it's good to see so many health advantages with drinking coffee. I have a cup every morning to help me get through the day. I'll be waiting for your post on the disadvantages. Hopefully it won't be too bad.
