Flannery O'Connor and Symbolism

Because I was reading Flannery O'Connor I decided to think about her themes and it occurred to me that she was so involved with symbolism that she wrapped up her fictional world in a kind of cocoon of meaning where every action had a significance and every major character has a symbolic meaning. The Violent Bear It Away is my favorite novel of hers, and it's always a relaxing experience to read it. There's so much good fun in the book, and also serious and significant undercurrents of spiritual life. I wish I could have met her. I don't think she ever worked at any Philadelphia jobs.
