Great Gifts that Can Save Lives

I am a firm believer in the potential for genetic research to solve most health problems. In fact, today there are at least 70 diseases that can be treated effectively with the advanced Cryo-Cell technology. And the good news is that in the near future, that is, within your lifetime, and certainly within the next ten to twenty years, that number will grow to the thousands. So that there will be literally no disease that cannot be treated with the newest genetic technology. But in order for the genetic promise to become a rality, you need access to cells which come from your family. The best cells to use (and to store in frozen state for later use) are the stem cells from cord blood. So, if you know anyone who is expecting a baby, and if you are wondering what to get as a gift, you may wish to consider a gift certificate in the minimum amount of $50 and up. These Gift Certificate presents can allow someone to pay their Cryo-Cell bill, which can total in the hundreds and thousands of dollars over the years as the storage costs accumulate. Though this technology is not inexpensive, the benefits far outweigh the costs because of the life-saving potential of the treatments that can be obtained using Current Offers from Cryo-Cell. In other words, you may be alerting the recipient to a beautiful new life that awaits them if anyone contracts a deadly disease and if that disease is one of the 70 that can currently be treated. As mentioned, this technology is the breakthrough that SF writers have been talking about for years. The future is here. It's time to share the good news.

The Car Driven By Hunter S. Thompson

Naturally Hunter S. Thompson drove a fast convertible, which he called the Red Shark, in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Chuck Berry would have been proud of him. But did you know that he actually also owned a tractor! The guy would go out at night and drive his tractor. One day one of his friends confronted him and told him that he (Hunter) had shot his own tractor with a shotgun! Hunter denied it. But then where did those bullet holes come from?

Las Vegas in Style

Any fan of Hunter S. Thompson has got to love las vegas strip, a site that lets you visit the famed Las Vegas area and even see inside hotels and around locations that the Gonzo journalist made famous in his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Not only that, but you can also book a trip there so that you, too, can visit the city that plays such a large role in his book and in the movie based upon it, starring Johnny Depp. But since this is a health blog, I bet you're wondering how in the name of Paradise this could relate to health. My answer is that you need to know that despite his persona as a drug-abusing fiend, Hunter S. Thompson actually wanted to maintain good health, and he ate a bowl of fruit a day and took many vitamins to try to accomplish that goal.

  1. Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson by William McKeen, p. 345.

The fact is that Ibogaine is a substance that is not addictive, but instead it interrupts and breaks addiction to cocaine, morphine, opium, and even alcohol and tobacco. I'm reading The Ibogaine Story and find it a terrific read. It tells the history of the discovery of Ibogaine, how Howard Lotsof patented its use as an addiction interrupter, and how the drug has been banned in the United States, despite its greatr promise! This is a must read for anyone interested in Ibogaine.

Colds Not Cause by Cold Temperatures

The cold weather that is upon us is not itself the cause of the common cold! Instead it is bacteria and virus infection that cause the cold. In the cold weather, there is increased likelihood of transmission because the throat is more receptive to the germs that can live for longer in this kind of weather. Moreover, crowded schoolchildren in buses also cause a problem of the spread of germs. The best defense is enough sleep, good nutrition, washing your hands frequently, and possibly using good clothing, like UGG Knightsbridge.

The best book on the subject of ibogaine is clearly the title, The Ibogaine Story. It covers everything, but most importantly it focuses on the groundbreaking work of Howard Lotsof, Bob Sisko, and Dana Beal. The book is filled with excerpts from other works as well as a narrative history of the ibogaine movement in the United States and worldwide. Attention is given to the Bwiti in Africa, the European clinics, and the work of Deborah mash. For anyone interested in ibogaine, it is a must read. It also covers the link with the work of Philip K. Dick, the SF writer whose books dealt with the hallucinogenic experience.

I think most of us know strawberry fruit. This kind of fruit is high in levels in vitamin C and antioxidants. Not only do strawberries taste great but they also have plenty of health benefits. They help to cure high blood pressure, heart diseases, arthritis and more. So if you want to stay healthy and beautiful, you might wish to eat more strawberries. In fact, I bought two boxes of strawberries this afternoon, and we both ate them. They're yummy! We could hardly stop eating them.

The Man Who Cured Cancer

Dr. David Vesely may have discovered a cure for cancer. His approach is unorthodox and has not yet been tested on humans, but it shows so much promise that he was awarded a $10,000 prize, the Service to America Career Achievement Medal, and was honored recently by the University of Southern Florida where he teaches.

Apparently the heart produces hormones. Vesely discovered this fact, and then discovered three hormones manufactured by the heart. One of those hormones kills cancer cells.

If the rat research translates into humans, then a cure for cancer could be as close as three years away. Critics say that if this hormone is produced by the heart, why isn't it already working to cure cancer? But perhaps the quantity of the hormone is insufficient in those who get cancer.

Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television

I never watch television. Oh, all right, that's not true. I watch a little now and then; maybe a total of ten minutes a week. I sometimes go long stretches of time without any television whatsoever. I don't think this is necessarily good or bad. But I did read a book when I was in my teens or twenties, Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television by Jerry Mander. The book made a lot of sense to me. But when I do deign to watch television, I always like to keep far away from the front and side of the screen, to avoid harmful electromagnetic radiation. And I like to sit on comfortable tv furniture.

Tea Song

Tea for Two
, which I have commented on earlier in this blog, is here sung by my favorite singer, Doris Day. What Led Zeppelin lacks in delicacy, what Keith Richards lacks in subtlety, what the Sex Pistols lack in harmony, Doris Day has in spades. This crooner is a winner from start to finish. This little movie clip illustrates how to integrate a song into a script. The camera moves here and there, and lingers lovingly on the duo at the heart of the scene. When Doris joins in it's sugar and sweetness all the way. All we need is a brass band to complete the contrast. Tea for Two is the perfect song for a lovely fall day. Oh, and since this is a health blog, I might as well mention that tea is very good for you! (Doris & Gordon MacRae at piano in the film Tea for Two. Gene Nelson and Billy De Wolfe are the other actors.)

The research indicates that tea confers numerous health benefits upon those who consume even moderate amounts, especially green and white tea. Benefits include, but are not limited to:
  1. Reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease
  2. Reduction of some types of cancer
  3. Promotion of oral health
  4. Anti-hypertensive effect
  5. Body weight control
  6. Antibacterial effect
  7. Antivirasic activity
  8. Solar ultraviolet protection
  9. Bone mineral density increase
  10. Anti-fibrotic properties, and
  11. Neuroprotective power

Tea for Two

The expression Tea for Two is a popular one and it's even a song. The idea is that two people are enjoying tea together. The notion of people drinking and eating together is part of every culture. But drinking is especially popular as a group activity, including drinking alcoholic beverages.

Horses feel thirst as soon as they physiologically need water. But not so with humans. We don't perceive thirst until approximately thrity minutes after we need water. This is because humans have evolved to drink together. It is a social thing, and it explains why there are so many bars and pubs in the world. This curious factoid should also encourage you to drink more liquids, especially if you're alone and not receiving the social cues we humans need to keep ourselves hydrated.

Hunter S. Thompson's Health

The reason for Hunter S. Thompson's putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger, killing himself instantly in 2005 is unknown. He said, in his suicide note to his wife, which he gave her four days before the event, that he didn't want to live past the age of 50. But what exactly prompted his violent demise? What motivated him? Why did he plan it so methodically? Today I picked up a copy of the new biography of Thompson: Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson by William McKeen. I am looking forward to reading it! I opened it in the bookstore (Strand Books in New York City) and happened to come across a line where McKeen mentions that he thought maybe Hunter had a terminal illness. Or, forgive me, maybe that was McKeen's comment in a recent radio show or podcast that he appeared in. Anyway, will report on the book more in a later post. I simply wanted to mention that being in good health is one reason that people do not kill themselves, and that's one more reason to keep you health in top form. (Photo: HST and wife.)

Your Medication Reminders

If your memory is gone or if you feel you can't remember important things like when to take your medications, then Medication Reminders by SMS may help. offers worldwide sms reminders which can tell you it's time to take those pills. You can set it up to remind you on multiple phones, too.

Life Extension

Life Extension Foundation in Florida produces a magazine: LifeExtension. This is the best health magazine published today. I look forward to each new issue. When I get it I call my friends and say, "Hey, did you read the latest article? Did you see the news about such and such supplements? Can you believe the latest breakthrough!" No one is as enthusiastic about this magazine as me. I highly recommended it.

The tea industry should be happy because I endorse tea. This is because tea has antioxidant properties. It contains a number of beneficial natural compounds, most notably Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This is a Catechin (catechins are antioxidants), also known as a flavonoid. These compounds (EGCG) have been shown to reduce clogged arteries and fight cancer. These compounds are also found in fruits and vegetables and in chocolate.

My interest in tea was recently rekindled because of learning that Ray Kurzweil drinks 7-10 cups per day. The world needs a book about tea documenting the latest research, much of which is very exciting and positive.

The Atkins Revolution

Abstract: This is the introduction for an article on the Atkins diet.

Atkins, for all its controversy, for all the hoopla about how effective it is, for all the criticism, for all the ridicule heaped upon the man and his organization, for all the positive and negative written about him, – Atkins is quite simply one of the most important topics anyone can discuss these days. And the reason why Atkins is so important should be clear to anyone who cares about their own physical health or the health of those they love. Because Atkins (the diet, the man, and the philosophy behind it) represents one of the most foresightful and innovative investigations into what constitutes the ideal human diet; and, when you get right down to it, what could be more important that that? What could be more essential? or more vital? or more necessary?; assuming, of course, that you want to live to a ripe old age and do it in style, with a high quality of life and being sound in body and mind! This is the Atkins promise, and this is why investigating this topic is probably the most important issue facing human society today.

And yet Atkins has been neglected as if he were an embarrassment to the medical community and he has been relegated to a position of ridicule. This neglect is another reason why Atkins is important because what if he’s right? Why not look at the issue squarely, look it in the face, examine it on its merits and do some clinical studies to test its basic premises instead of neglecting it and shutting it away from the light of scrutiny. Because of the weighty matters it touches upon, namely, the ideal diet for a human, Atkins deserves better treatment than the neglect in the scientific community that he has received to date.

This article will examine this most important subject – the Atkins diet – and thoroughly investigate the history of Atkins, how the diet came to be, and how it is helping millions today, despite being ridiculed and neglected by the medical community at large.

Hunter S. Thompson's Home Business

Drugs were the favorite pastime of Hunter S. Thompson. He seemed to like drugs more than sex. In fact, when he had an opportunity to relax, he usually had a beer or a glass of alcohol and then some drugs. This kind of home business cannot last forever. In fact, when you find that you're looking forward to the next drug more than to the next book or song, you might have a problem. It might be time for you to kick back and try some rhodiola, which has the ability to reduce craving for other drugs.

Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna pruriens is an herb that produces dopamine in the brain. The purpose of taking a supplement like this is primarily to treat Parkinson's. Healthy individuals who consume the supplement may experience a boost in mood and focus as dopamine levels rise. The herb is comprised of a number of substances, the main one being L-dopa, which turns into dopamine. Dopamine can lead to increased aggression. This herb is available without a prescription. A number of individuals who have used it said that it worked as a smart drug, or nootropic, increasing mental focus.

Protection against Frizzy Hair Static

When I discover a new drug or supplement, I make a note in my health file on my computer. Then I save that file to my compact flash. The reason I keep a backup file is that in case my desktop is destroyed by a lightning strike or a girl with frizzy static hair, I'll have a backup copy on my flash. Paralyzing electrical storms and static discharges from girls with teased hair are two of the biggest threats to any computer system,—and I'm prepared for both.

Half-life of Huperzine

The half-life of huperzine is about 3 hours. This means it will have an effect that lasts longer than prescription meds (like tacrine and physostigmine ) that do the same thing (boost acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter that helps focus and memory).

Another remarkable advantage and benefit of huperzine is that it is very selective, acting primarily on acetylcholine in the brain and not elswhere in the body, thereby avoiding unwanted side effects that are seen with prescription medications. In addition, huperzine promotes the outgrowth of neurons, facilitating brain power.

Huperzine is coming into its own as an herbal supplement that can help the elderly as well as the young. The substance is helpful for two reasons. It acts immediately to boost brain power, focus and memory. It brightens mood and makes the central nervous system function more efficiently. It does this by raising levels of acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter. Jerry Hermeyer (pictured here) was on the brink of losing his memory when Dr. Francis Blothner and Carmel Cantankorwitz induced him to participate in a clinical trial of huperzine A. Within two days of starting the trial his mind was sharper, his memory was restored to youthful levels, and his mood brightened. Jerry is now able to get back to his life, running a swimming pool cleaning company in Topeka. "I love pools," says Jerry, "and I'm so glad I can get back to my life, managing my pool cleaning service. I will come to your house and clean your pool, and don't be surprised if, when I do, I start telling you how huperzine changed my life."

The other way huperzine helps is by restoring neurological function and protecting against degenerative brain disease. These exciting results have scientists giving huperzine a new look and the supplement is probably going to be in the news in 2008 and 2009 as the results of new clinical trials become available.

Online Recipe

I'm so glad that I found this online recipe today. Because I'm very interested in cooking different dishes. I like to cook every meal especially for my family and friends. I'm not a good cook but if I will follow this recipe maybe I will become a better cook someday. Well, lets see.

The Three Stooges inspire me. They cook but make many mistakes. I can do a better job than they can. That is why I like comedy. It makes me feel good about myself and my limited skills as a cook. I wish I had a television in my kitchen so that I could watch them while I cook!

Drugs | Old and New

Hunter S. Thompson set out from LA to Las vegas in his classic road book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But the drugs he used in the book are yesterday's drugs: LSD, mescaline, ether, uppers, downers, cocaine and alcohol. If he were to make the trip today, I wonder what he'd take along. Perhaps an updated version of the book would involve some of the newer drugs, smart drugs, as they are called. These substances would have given him a more intense experience, would have distorted his perceptions less, and might have even made him enjoy himself more. They include such mind enhancing substances as maca, pregnenolone, vinpocetine, huperzine, and DMAE. He could also have used some other nootropics and had just as much fun. In fact, he might have been conscious during more of the trip. The book, however, is excellent, darkly funny, and a whiz of a read, even today, more than thirty years after its initial 1971 publication.

Let's Shop in the USA

There is nothing like the feeling of having your ideas and products sold and followed all over the world. The sending of ideas from one nation to another is a very good policy, and the sending of products is even better because it can lead to the marketing of your products and an increase in your income. The only snag in this wonderful scenario is when you talk about trying to buy and sell on eBay and then get those products shipped overseas; the company just won't let you do it and is limited, instead, for some reason, to only shipping to U.S. addresses. But worry not! There is a workaround. And it's a great one, too. Here's the plan. You use a usa address and your packages can be sent to this company and they will notify you by email when your shipment arrives at their door and they will give you the option to ship the material to you overseas in any country, via an inexpensive method. It's a terrific plan, and one that is sure to being more products to you. Also, visit them at and put the link on your page to earn income! It's that easy!

Caffeine and the Blood Brain Barrier

The blood brain barrier protects the delicate machinery of the brain from chemical insult and injury; however, caffeine readily crosses the blood brain barrier and, like nicotine, causes effects in the brain for a period of time after ingestion. The primary effect of caffeine in the brain is to bind to adenosine receptors, preventing adenosine from doing its job. The job of adenosine is to calm the brain and promote sleep. Each hour we are awake, more adenosine is produced. Caffeine prevents adenosine from being absorbed in the brain, thus disrupting brain function. Coffee may also be dopaminergic, causing a mood increase. The problem is that the action is unnatural and may lead to addiction and other side effects, such as sleeplessness.

Are You Using Toxic Chemicals Every Day?

How many times do you use products without recognizing what those chemicals on the label mean? Things like propylene glycol (which is suspected of being an immunotoxicant, a neurotoxicant, a respiratory toxicant and a skin or sense organ toxicant). A new way to determine whether your products contain toxic chemicals is open to everyone with the Internet site They will let you enter a search term and then it reveals how harmful the product is. The best way to search the site is by using Google site search. For example, in Google type: propylene glycol

and hit ENTER. Then you will see the data on this substance.

C'elle the Life Saver

If you, like me, are an avid SF fan then you have read about societies in which genetic engineering is a reality. For example, in The three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Philip K. Dick (author of Blade Runner) writes about Dr. Denkmal, who allows his patients to evolve and experience greater brain and cognitive power in the course of a few treatments. These are painless treatments that lead a host of people to new discoveries, like the C'Elle Testimonials, which explain that you are now in the promised future that SF used to talk about as being the horizon to be reached. In fact C'Elle has allowed women to reach that horizon in the year 2008 and to harvest their own stem cells for use for themselves or their relatives when the time comes to fight some dreaded disease. Cryo-Cell International has developed the techniques and tools that are available to all women of child bearing years. You can direct your own preservation of cells by contacting them and they will freeze the cells for future use, cryo-preserving the cells to be used later. It is probably a good idea to invest in yourself by cryopreserving your stem cells at the time you are young and healthy. You can get this today for $399, which includes the first year of frozen storage. Order online at, using promotional code S399. If you wish more info, you can call and speak to one of their service representatives at any time, and the client advisors will help you. Try for more info and a complimentary "Go Green" gift.

Caffeine's Half Life

The half life of caffeine (the time needed to excrete half the ingested dose) is 3-4 hours in healthy individuals. This means that even three to four hours after drinking coffee, half of it is still active in your system. The full excretion of the caffeine is due to the cytochrome P450 enzyme system in the liver. Caffeine is not only still in the system but it is still in the blood and tissues of the body. This may be desirable if one is hoping to stay alert. But it may prove difficult for those not accustomed to caffeine and it may disturb sleep. After 20 years not drinking coffee, I had two cups yesterday. The result: I awoke at 4:00 a.m. this morning.

Do You Have Halloween Costume?

No health blog would be complete this Halloween season without mentioning that it is counterproductive to eat candy, even for youngsters, because of its deleterious effect on blood sugar and insulin levels. That being said, I hope everyone has a great Halloween, and a good costume is part and parcel of the fun on that day. Halloween Costume Stores has rapid and effortless returns and also complimentary shipping on orders over sixty dollars until October 10, 2008, so all you devils and princesses can get ready for the big day. My favorite thing to be on Halloween is a pirate, and this is because I am a big fan of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. In that story a young boy is captured by pirates and spirited away with Long John Silver to an island where buried treasure is the goal of the parties converging on the spot. When things go wrong gunplay is involved and the boy learns an important lesson about who to trust and who to avoid. The Halloween costumes that can be associated with the story include the pirates and the boy and also the minister, his step-father. As with all stories, it is always more fun when the story comes to life.

Dangers of Coffee

Coffee may have helped me write a chapter yesterday, but I'm already close to finishing another chapter today without it. My research has uncovered some very serious negatives associated with coffee including:
  • It overworks the adrenal glands.
  • It produces adrenaline and cortisol at times when they are not needed.
  • It produces a hangover and depression equal to, if not greater than, the high associated with its use.
  • It is addictive.
  • It damages blood vessels.
  • It causes heart problems.
  • It raises blood pressure.
  • It causes balance and stability problems.
  • It causes jitters.
  • It destroys nerve cells.
  • It attacks the lining of the stomach, causing ulcers.
Yes, Balzac used coffee effectively to boost his writing output. But it also hastened the end of his life. Much better if he had avoided coffee, perhaps, and lived longer. He would have written just as well, I'm convinced.
