Why I Go to the Gym

I go to the gym four or five times a week and there's one good reason why. It's not to lose weight. It's for general strength and cardio conditioning. Working out at the gym is good for many parameters of health. But it does nothing to help you lose weight. As Gary Taubes points out in Good Calories, Bad Calories it's a myth that exercise keeps your weight down. Exercise burns calories, that's true. But not many. And it increases hunger. So it doesn't on average result in more caloric expenditure compared to calories consumed. The only thing that helps lose weight is cutting the carbs. But back to my main point about the value of exercise. I have known this since I was in my early twenties and have never forgotten the lesson. But I personally don't own any strength equipment. And that's why I love going to the gym. They have everything!
