Pools and Presidents

My favorite president was Woodrow Wilson. I also like Abe Lincoln. I also like Franklin D. Roosevelt and his social security disability plan. The president I like best is Wilson because he was a big advocate of pools. Swimming was a hobby of his in his youth and he spent a good deal of his time in the White House trying to get Americans to swim more, a very worthwhile goal.

Transcendental Meditation

I have come back from my trip to India where I was studying Indian meditation techniques. One of the things I discovered was that Transcendental Meditation (TM) is one of the most popular approaches in that country, as it is here in the States. It's well known that Americans aren't as connected to the Eastern mysticism of Hindu and Buddhist approaches. Yet TM is really fun and when you do it you sometimes see nice colors and spinning lights.

Coffee and Cigarettes

The fact is that smoking and coffee drinking reduce Parkinson's disease, according to epidemiological studies. It is not known whether specific brands like Black and Mild cigars are any better than cigarettes, but I would like to find out. The truth is that scientists don't know why this effect occurs. It might have something to do with MAO inhibition, but more research is needed.

Why MAO-B is Not Your Friend

GH3, also known as Gerovital H3, is the invention of Ana Aslan, a Romanian doctor. Her discovery was that a common anesthetic, novocaine, could work as a weak reversible competitive MAO-B inhibitor. She altered novocaine slightly so that it would not have an anesthetic effect, and that made it even more effective. This means that it could reduce the problems that people over 45 have with an increase in MAO-B in the brain. If you buy GH3 and it makes your mouth numb, you haven't bought the original (and best) GH3 on the market. The best U.S. source we have found (and we are not affiliated with them in any way) is Tierra Mega-Nutrients. (Photo: Dr. Ana Aslan)

Tea and Coffee

Here's a little secret that is sure to help those of you who are coffee addicts. Try putting a teabag into your next cup of coffee. It has the effect of mellowing the experience. You'll be getting slightly more caffeine content, but the addition of the theanine (from the tea) will reduce the jitters you'll feel from the caffeine and the tea will have a relaxing effect. Theanine also increases dopamine.

Sugar and Spice and Some Protein

For those who want a carbohydrate and protein meal with no fat you might wish to consider the latest fad called the Medifast diet. Typical packages contain more carbs than protein (12 vs 11 grams, for example) and 0 grams fat. How this will work in the real work is not hard to imagine. The protein is not the problem, but the lack of fat and the addition of carbs goes counter to all that has been written about the danger of spiking insulin and causing diabetes with excess sugar and carbs.

GPS Accuracy Is Improved

Every gps systems expert says the same thing. It's a miracle. Today the GPS system is better than it was ten or fifteen years ago. Due to legislation enacted by President Bill Clinton, there is now no error placed in the signal as there had been up until recently for all but military uses. Now there is no error for civilian use also. It used to be that the GPS system could only pinpoint you to 100 yards. Now it is to within ten feet. But remember, it's all based on microwaves . . .
