Three Foundations of Health

There are three foundations to health. The first is not psoriatic arthritis treatment, although some claim this is their most important health concern. The first foundation is the heart. The second is the circulatory system. The third is the muscular system. Once these three foundations are in order good health is assured. The further we get from these foundations the more shaky the health might be.

Cocoa Increases Nitric Oxide, Fights Macular Degeneration, and Reduces Blood Pressure

The consumption of flavanol-rich cocoa increases nitric oxide production, which improves endothelial function. The antioxidants in cocoa may prevent and reduce age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). Cocoa has also been demonstrated to reduce blood pressure. The best cocoa to use for these health purpose is cocoa powder without sugar.

DHEA for Health

The use of DHEA for health is a somewhat controversial topic, but one thing is clear: There is much more to be learned about this substance. Some thought it was simply a feel-good hormone. Some experienced nothing when using it. Others felt their mood brighten and a surge of energy. The risks of overuse are not clearly defined but might include substantial mutations of various organs, such as the prostate. But with proper balancing of hormones, such risks might be avoided. A number of popular books about this supplement are available, including one by Ray Sahelian, M.D.

When DHEA levels are higher there is less mortality from all causes.3

The Foundations of Health and Longevity

To humidify or not to dehumidify, that is the question, as Shakespeare would have said. But a health secret few know is that a dehumidifier need not be used for maximum comfort if an electric fan is ready to hand. The health of a nation is not so much dependent upon the use of electronic devices as it is upon the use of reason, evidence-based medicine, and proper exercise. These are the foundations of health and longevity.

In our opinion the most important health secret is not where you shop but what you shop for. My friends who shop for the right foods can shop almost anywhere, and if the store does not have what they want they simply don't buy.

Melatonin "Cures" Macular Degeneration

Melatonin can halt and reverse macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness and reduced vision in the elderly.1 The process whereby this happens is remarkable. Scientists now believe that as we age we produce significantly less melatonin, and this results in degraded macular function. A study with 100 patients revealed that melatonin not only halted, but improved, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).2 (Image shows improvement. See reference for more images.)3 Researchers used 3 mg per night, which is the standard dose in most melatonin supplements. Health and Nietsche

My health is protected. It is insured by the food I ingest. Nietzsche was of the same mind. Garbage in, garbage out, he believed. He didn't say it in so many words. But he did say it in his book Ecce Homo, his autobiography. His life insurance rate would have been low. Of course, he suffered near the end from mental disturbances and thinking he was Dionysus. But we all have our foibles.

Food in Books | Health Implications

Health often boils down to information. If your resumes are related to health, you may wish to add information about your diet. The diet I follow changes over time. I am reading a good book by Philip Roth, Exit Ghost. But it does not talk much about food. I always like my books to talk about food. Food and nutrition are one of the foundations of good health. I cannot imagine a good book that does not mention food at least once or twice. The James Bond novels are always talking about food and alcohol.

Macrobiotic Diets

It is not possible in the short space allotted to me to give a complete survey of macrobiotic diets. Suffice it to say that they are based on eating grains and fresh foods. The diet may still promote diabetes because of the reliance on grains. But they (the followers of this diet) also caution against overeating. The macrobiotic diet was followed by J.D. Salinger for a time, and may be one reason he has lived to a ripe old age. Those who wish to try this diet, or who have experimetned with it, are encouraged and welcomed to comment in the comments section below.

You Probably Don't Get Enough Vitamin D

I have received a number of calls. They ask about adult acne solutions. There is nothing like good old sunshine and plenty of it, I tell them. My nutritional research indicates that sunlight is a good source of vitamin D. There is also vitamin D available as D3 in pills. Most people have inadequate levels of vitamin D in their blood. Recent tests of Life Extension members, many of whom take vitamin D supplements, showed that 83 percent were deficient. This is amazing. If you live north of the Mason-Dixon line, you probably don't get enough vitamin D - even if you do take supplements.

7-Keto DHEA Dangers

One of my medical gurus is Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D., who points out that proponents of 7-Keto DHEA claim that it has no steroid effects. He says that he does not believe this, and he will continue to refuse to believe this until he sees evidence to the contrary. This suggests that products that are composed primarily of 7-Keto, such as quick weight loss products, may be misrepresenting what they can do for you in the long term. The fact is that the decline in steroids is one cause of weight gain. But don't be so fast to jump on the steroid bandwagon. Balance and moderation is the key. You need to know how to balance the metabolites of any steroid you ingest.

In this video, which is not specifically related to health, Keith Richards plays acoustic guitar. But, friends, this is about health on many levels. It is about physical health, because Richards recovered from a heroin addiction. It is about mental health, because his music clearly keeps him same. And it is about artistic health and creativity, because this is one of the most prolific songwriters of the past hundred years. Rock on, Keith!

Nitric Oxide Book

The weight game is just that, a game. There are new diets every day. There is a diet a minute, if you watch the news. The slimquick side effects are just one of the diets and diet apparatus you can see. But health boils down to real results. The health of America is based on real results, such as some of the results achieved by Atkins. My latest interest, however, is in the advantages of boosting nitric oxide, and Nobel Prize winner Dr Louis Ignarro has written a book on the subject, called No More Heart Disease.

The Jury Is Still Out on HGH

At this time there are some products that are without sufficient research and information to recommend them as safe, and according to Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman, M.D., in their book Fantastic Voyage, human growth hormone is one of those dice rolls that they have not opted to try. However, advances in research and medicine are pushing the boundary further every day, and new modes of therapy are becoming more recognized. It may be that before long this one is accepted by mainline anti-aging physicians and their patients. Until then, however, I believe the jury is still out on this one.

Sunlight in the Winter

There are none. I mean there are no best acne treatments. The best treatment is probably vitamin D and sunlight. This statement is based on a review of some of the literature. The health benefits of sunlight are too numerous to mention in this short post. But those who live in the South get less cancer, as a general rule, than those who live in the North. In the South you can also enjoy New Orleans cooking. Well, that's it for today's health message. Sunlight, even in winter, is good for your health.

The Best Diet for Health

Never mind the pills that are available, I keep telling my clients. I am not really sure about the fat burner products. The one product you want is information about what kinds of foods will do you the most good and which ones will do you the most harm. This is why I have been looking carefully at all the literature on diet and fat metabolism. The unfortunate thing is that there is no consensus. There should be a consensus but there is not, at this time. That is why I advise people to keep their ear to the grapevine because soon there will be more information on what is the best diet. Read the ingredients carefully before buying.

What Fresh Foods Are Good?

I wish to consume more fresh foods to boost general health. But how am I going to do this? There are not that many fresh foods I can eat around here. I mean I have salads with lettuce and radishes and green peppers and onions and tomatoes and carrots and olives, but is that enough? I'll have an apple and an orange, maybe a banana, strawberries, or blueberries when they're in season. But what else? Okay, now and then a stick of celery. But what else? I don't like raw broccoli or cauliflower so I steam these and have them with butter and a little soy sauce. But if anyone can suggest any other fresh foods, please leave a note in the comments section below. Thank you!

I went to a playground with my family and their friends last Haloween and I met a cardiologist from India. When I learned that he was a heart doctor I thought I'd get some free medical advice. "What can you tell me?" I asked. "What tips would you give to the average healthy person who wants to maintain their cardiac health?" The doctor smiled. "You must walk every day, and I mean walk fast. Don't go with your wife. She will slow you down. You could also use an elliptical or a treadmill, but walking fast is sufficient. Also consume some olive oil daily." When I asked him why the olive oil, he said it was good for the heart.

Coffee Problems

I tried a health experiment last week. I drank coffee for five days straight. One cup a day, except for the last day, when I had two. The thing I noticed was an increased ability to concentrate on whatever I was writing. People could come into the room and I would just block them out and keep working. Marvelous! But the edge wasn't worth it, in my opinion, because of a problem with my sleep. I found myself waking up in the middle of the night or in the early morning. My sleep was shallow. Does everybody suffer like this from sleep disturbances because of caffeine? And then for the three or four days while I was in withdrawal, I felt listless and down. Gym Days

Palm reading is not my cup of tea. I do not believe in it. Like Sam Harris I am skeptical of anything that is not logical and grounded in reality. But fitness equipment is another matter. That's something I don't have to take on faith. I personally think that belonging to a gym is a good idea. It's fun to go to a gym when it's busy because you get energy from seeing all the other people working out. It's also fun when it's empty because you feel like you own the place.
